The rise of AI has changed nearly every industry, and restoration is no exception. AI is certainly one of the technologies that has made the work of restoration insurance billing more efficient and accessible. At the same time, it’s prompted a big question for many contractors: Will AI eventually replace the human side of claims negotiation?
At One Claim Solution, we don’t think so. We believe that the personal, human element of negotiating restoration claims is more important than ever. Without real people behind the restoration insurance billing process, claims negotiation and billing can be less accurate and less effective.
AI is good at finding patterns in large amounts of data. But restoration job and claims have a lot of context that simply doesn’t show up in the raw data. And negotiation requires judgment, human judgment. Pushing a claim across the finish line often depends on relationships, tone, and timing, none of which AI can do as well as a human.
For example, when a carrier pushes back on overhead and profit, it takes a trained human to explain why it was justified on the job, using job-specific facts and documentation. It takes human intuition to know when to escalate, when to stand your ground, and when to compromise to keep a payment moving forward.
That said, AI can absolutely make the job of restoration billing and claims negotiation easier. At One Claim Solution, we’ve developed internal AI tools to support our billing team and give them faster access to the information they need. Josh has seen it
“I used to spend 5-10 minutes digging through claim notes just to get caught up,” Josh Ehmke, OCS CoFounder and General Counsel, says. “Now, with AI-generated summaries built into our system, I get a clear, concise picture right away. The important distinction is that AI isn’t making the decisions. It’s supporting the humans making the decisions about restoration claims and negotiation. “Even with the best AI, someone still has to verify that the data makes sense. You can’t blindly trust it, because at the end of the day, it’s your name on the line, not the machine’s,” Josh explains.
When it comes to claims negotiation, relationships matter. Even in an industry full of automated responses and AI-generated denials, many adjusters still respond better to a real person who understands the claim, communicates clearly, and knows when to push and when to listen.
Experienced claims negotiators don’t just read a script; they read the situation. They build rapport over time with adjusters, learn the quirks of different carriers, and use that knowledge to navigate conversations. That’s not something AI can replicate.
Josh explains, “A lot of times our people are on the phone with adjusters who will take the time to review multiple claims in a single call because there’s a real relationship there. That kind of back-and-forth doesn’t happen when it’s just software sending back-and-forth templated responses. It takes a human touch.”
So where does that leave restoration contractors? The goal isn’t to resist AI; it’s to be smart about how you use it. When paired with smart people and solid processes, AI can be an incredible asset. But when it’s used to replace human judgment, it often leads to poor outcomes, especially in complex restoration claims.
